This month, we want to introduce you to a person who’s been an integral part of Spark Theater Company’s achievements: Caleb Brooks.
Caleb has been a part of Spark Theater Company since its inception. Caleb is not only the director of all of Spark Theater’s shows, but he’s a vital part of the day-to-day working of the theater.
“The guy is a machine,” said Tony Rush, Spark Theater co-founder. “Most days, he’s at the theater by 10am working on sets and constructions…and then switches gears around 4pm to assist with various classes in our After School Theater Program or rehearsals as late as 8 and 9pm. Then he does it all again the next day. He has no ‘off’ switch.”
But it’s not just Caleb’s work ethic that sets him apart. He’s got a tremendous amount of theater knowledge and experience from his work at Chipola College’s theater program to working in and around various SEACT productions in the Wiregrass.
Caleb is the son of Russell and Nancy Brooks (both community theater veterans as well as morning drive-time personalities with JOY-FM radio here in Dothan). Being in the Brooks family has meant a lot of involvement in local theater both onstage and off.
Caleb has performed in a variety of shows including “Oliver”, “The Drowsy Chaperone” and “Moonlight & Magnolias”. He’ll also be directing “Second Samuel” later this month for Spark Theater Company….a show that he starred in a few years ago when SEACT performed it.
Since serving as Spark Theater Company’s Artistic Director, Caleb has helped Spark Theater accumulate dozens of awards from regional and international theater competitions. In the last two years, he’s directed The Addams Family, Cast List, Elf The Musical, I Don’t Want To Talk About It, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and many more.
His work on Legally Blonde The Musical, Jr. resulted in 14 awards including Best Show, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Musical. Most recently, he directed Guys and Dolls at the Dothan Cultural Arts Center to packed audiences every night.
When asked what his favorite thing about working with Spark Theater Company, his response was almost instant: “Seeing the students progress. Watching them put what they learn into practice and improve themselves. We’ve had students who could barely find the confidence to audition who are now some of the strongest performers we have. It’s incredibly rewarding to be a part of that.”
Spark Theater is proud to have Caleb Brooks as our Artistic Director and we hope you’ll take the time to meet him at an upcoming show!
